The Serune Region Plot
Pokemon. Mysterious creatures, their population as large as the humans and most likely much older than human civilization. For countless centuries, humans lived alongside Pokemon, often unknowingly. But as time passed, more people would become aware of the existence of their neighbors and, inevitably, learn to live side by side with them. As the human civilization progressed, so did the bonds between humans and Pokemon, finally reaching what was believed to be their peak in the early twenty-first century. In reality, however, it was the beginning of the end.
Soon, people decided to use their Pokemon to their advantage, to help destroy the weak. In mere years, Pokemon had largely lost their position as precious friends and companions. They became tools and sources of entertainment, their rights as living beings often disregarded.
The people of the Serune Region were some of the worst. They thought that if the Pokemon had such amazing powers, then why could they not help improve the humans' lives? And so they made Pokemon the source of their electricity and their energy, making the creatures work day and night with no rest, labeling them as nothing more than mere beasts of burden. Humankind found themselves split into two political groups, the Higher and Lower Beings.
The Higher Beings were the ones the Pokemon worked for. Rich business owners, they were consumed by their own greed. They stuck determinedly to the "get ahead by any means" credo, overpowering the Pokemon and enslaving them. The Lower Beings, in stark contrast, tried to save the Pokemon. They wanted to return to the old days, where the Pokemon League provided fun adventures and bonding opportunities for people and Pokemon alike. Yet the Higher Beings had access to so much wealth and power that their protests were always put down.
After many, many protests, the Lesser Beings finally convinced the League to assist them, but to no avail. The Higher Beings banned the League, forcing them to operate their Gyms in secret. The Gyms were run by the few rich who sympathized with the Lower Beings, usually children of the Higher Beings that lacked the overwhelming need to make more money. Their private lands were the only areas both large enough to be suitable for battle and private enough to escape notice.
A sort of stalemate fell across the land, but during the long days of doing nothing, the Higher Beings began to wonder: could the Pokemon's power be harnessed to give humans powers? But the project failed, and instead of the humans staying humans with Pokepowers, the humans turned into Pokemon but with some human features. They were Pokemorphs. And so, the people started to create special educational programs for these “special” humans. Over time, the 'morphs started losing respect, thought of as freaks and despised by everyone, Higher and Lower Beings alike. They scattered throughout the region, forced into hiding by the sheer hatred of the humans.
Tensions rose, as the situation of the Pokemorphs became more and more desperate. Some Lower Beings thought of them as Pokemon, worthy of being protected. Most thought of them as monsters, insults to the Pokemon's name, thinking that they should be put down. Then, the unthinkable happened- a freak accident transformed a Higher One's child into a 'morph. The Pokemon saw this child as a sort of mid-way point, rebelling against their owners to kidnap him and attempt a compromise. Things violently exploded into outright war.
The Higher Ones wouldn't do their own dirty work, of course, so they started an organization known as Team Kavulent, a group of mercenaries to wipe out the League once and for all. It provided a way for the poor to make money, and a chance at redemption for the monsters that were 'morphs. They upheld the law, beating down Trainers in their twisted sense of justice. The war raged for years, which stretched into decades, to the point where the boy was dead and no one quite remembered why they were fighting in the first place. All anyone knew was that Training was illegal, and Kavulent ruled with an iron fist at the beck and call of their masters, the Higher Beings.
Then, once again, Serune was upset. Arceus himself appeared to a Higher Being with a prophecy: on this day, a boy would be born. A boy destined to end the war once and for all.
It's been fifteen years since the time of the prophecy- the boy, if he exists, will be rising soon. But how could he possibly fight without an army? The Trainers are scattered on their journeys, trying to raise their Pokemon to the point where they'd have a chance against Kavulent. Will this war finally end? Or will it destroy Serune forever? Only time will tell...
